11:30 AM – Wake Up “Molly Bear” – Opening of the KCIC Festival “everyone tries to wake up “Molly” from hibernation.
11:45 AM – Workshops and performances begin
2:30 PM – Grand Procession with everyone (dress up and act like a BEAR)
Workshops continue from 11:45 AM to 2:30 PM
STREET PAINTING : Artist Kurt Wenner leads young artists in transforming the new Kennedy Center Plaza parking lot into a giant street mural.
DANCE: Dancer and choreographer Maida Withers will lead willing dancers of all ages in learning the “Molly Bear” Dance culminating in a finale at 2:30 around the street painting.
STORY TELLING: Mythworks will present story telling for the younger children (3 to 6) and lead prop making workshops for older children. The props will be plaster casts of hands made and decorated by the participants. Huge masks will also be decorated by children to be used in the final procession with the dancers at 2:30.
MUSIC: Electronic expert Chris Patton will demonstrate the very latest in digital synthesizers and computers. He will show how one person can compose and create a soundtrack. Older students will be selected to try their hands at electronic composition.
THEATER: The Kennedy Center’s Traveling Young Players will make their debut performances in a new musical show, “Footprints in the Sky.”
CHARACTERS IN COSTUME: Actors and actresses dressed as favorite heroes and heroines will give a printed sheet telling their story or myth. Collect all 8 pages and go to the bindery to create a book to take home.
At 2:30 PM the finale of the day will begin focusing on the talents of the many young participants as the procession embraces a celebration dance, a rhythm band and the finished street painting.
Food carts will serve refreshments outside the Kennedy Center.
