Tukuhnikivatz and TUK – Films
Tukuhnikivatz – title for an evening-length projected film installation for the performance of Utah * Spirit Place * Spirit Planet * Tukuhnikivatz, a multimedia dance work commissioned by Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Great Dance in the Bandshell, August 20, 1996. Tukuhnikivatz , the name of a sacred mountain in southern Utah and the abbreviation, TUK, became title(s)for other dance films. In 1996 Maida Withers Dance Construction Company and filmmakers, James Byrne, spent six weeks in southern Utah creating and filming dance in four unique and challenging land sites. Over a six year period Maida Withers and Verabel Call Cluff, Utah filmmaker, continued the research in southern Utah. The original Tukuhnikivatz film for the Lincoln Center premiere features footage of ancient rock art in Utah, and other land and dance images to tell the story of Utah * Spirit Place * Spirit Planet * Tukuhnikivatz.
