Dance for the Earth
Prologue: Cowboys and Indians Play is a solo performance of dance and spoken text written and performed by Maida Withers – her view of the “west” as a cowgirl, the great granddaughter of pioneering settlers in Utah. Prologue presents the wit that underlies many of Withers’ works – a combination of hopefulness and cynicism about humans and the earth. Maida was born in Kanab, Utah, the small red-earth/dark sky Utah town on the Arizona border that was home for the earliest Hollywood Western Movies (Cowboys and Indian movies). Kanab was referred to as “Little Hollywood.” Prologue provides an opportunity for audiences to know Maida in an engaging and personal manner as she speaks and interacts with them. Withers Prologue script is available here and in the Dance Construction Company data archive.
“In the 1990’s, artists and the arts will play a central role as communicators of values in world consciousness of ecology and related social and cultural issues, working hand in hand with scientists and technology and the ancient knowledge of indigenous peoples as well. It is my desire for my works for video, site, and stage to contribute to this global movement.” Maida Withers, May 1991
Dance Construction Company was honored to present the evening-length work, Dance for the Earth, for Projeto OMAME Opening GALA in the beautiful National Theatre, Brasilia, Brazil, May 12, 1992.
Prologue is the opening dance to the evening-length Dance for the Earth Concert created in anticipation of Dance Construction Company’s participation in the United Nation’s Earth Summit, Eco ’92 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 3 to 14, 1992.
