Iwo Jima – US Marine Corps War Memorial

1976 – “In honor and in memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since November 10, 1775.”

MWDCCo obtained a permit from National Park Service to be on the grounds of the Marine Corps War Memorial.  Maida Withers, Brook Andrews, and John Bailey, Dance Construction Company founders, climbed the memorial for a brief performance, approximately 10 minutes in honor of those who had served to protect our freedoms. Frances Wessells, Dance Critic, Richmond, was present along with a small number of tourist.  Our mood was somber as might be expected.

After about thirty minutes, a National Park Policeman arrived and asked us to please leave.  Park police were receiving calls from drivers on Route 50 concerned about our presence there.  Of course we respectfully honored the request.
