Maida Rust Withers, Professor of Dance at George Washington University University and Artistic Director and Founder of Maida Withers and the Dance Construction Company, Washington, DC. presents a lecture with film, on Zoom for the 2020 EarthFest. Maida has been on the Board of Directors for Amazing Earthfest for 17 years.
Enjoy adventures and excerpts on film of dancers in the spectacular lands of Southern Utah and the Four Corners region with the award winning choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker.
In her presentation, Dance for the Earth: Spirit and Spectacle, Withers explores the Earth as a source for artistic content. Kanab is Maida’s place of birth. Maida’s ancestors arrived in the territory in the late 1800’s that eventually became the State of Utah.
Experience the Earth and the art of dance in new and challenging environments and engage in conversation about making dance works that reveal ancient and contemporary knowledge through the arts. In this presentation, Maida Withers will show films of dancers on location in Utah and in performance at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Great Dance in the Band Shell in New York City. Lincoln Center, New York City, commissioned the creation of the work, Utah-Spirit Place-Spirit Planet – Tukuhnikivatz.
