Dance Residency: Brigham Young University

Maida Withers, John Bailey, Brook Andrews, and John Driscoll were artists-in-residence at Brigham Young University Dance Program.  We taught daily classes in dance technique, dance improvisation, and performance.

BYU Women’s Gymnasium on the lower campus….the place in 1954 to 1958 where the dance program courses were offered and rehearsals took place.  Leona Holbrook was the amazing Women’s Physical Education program that supported dance getting the undergraduate degree.  Geraldine Glover was the primary dance artist/teacher.  The building continues to exist but the amazing BYU program has moved to directly near the Stadium and occupies many studios for dance….maybe the largest dance program in the United States at this time (2025).

Maida graduate with a BS in Dance from BYU in 1958.  She was deeply honored to return as a visiting artist for three or four weeks, June/July 1976. Two original performances that included workshop students.  One performance was scheduled around July 10, 1976.

Maida Withers and the Dance Construction Company became a 501-C-3, federally tax-exempt organization in 1974.

See the performance Thin Holes for more information about the residency.
